Entry 21 3.27.11

Entry 21, March 27th, 2011, 1:59pm (ship time)

Today marks the start of my fourth cruise. Last night was the first night that I had to say goodbye to people that I'd really gotten close to -- people come and go every week, but I hadn't really gotten to know anyone who left during my first two weeks. This week was different, though, and a number of us got pretty significantly drunk to celebrate completed contracts. I imagine it will only get worse as time goes on and I get to know my crewmates better.

I did manage to get vertical this morning to see some of them off, which was an impressive achievement if I may say so myself. Also, I have a new roommate -- Daniel. Tyler isn't leaving the ship, but he managed to finangle a single room for himself and is moving out right now. The new guy is a stage tech from South Africa. He seems nice, but I don't know him very well yet. He's been sleeping, mainly, because of a 13 hour layover in Atlanta. Gross.

Daniel is recently come from the Allure, just like my last roommate, Tyler. The Allure is the second ship of the Oasis class built by RCCL, and has only been at sea for a few months. I've mentioned this class of ships before, mainly because of their massive size . . . they carry over 5000 passengers and 2200 crew. According to Daniel, the Allure is carrying an extra 300 or so crew on account of being brand new -- it takes time to work all the bugs out of such a massive construct. He was staying in a passenger cabin for the past four months and didn't have a regular work schedule, instead going wherever he was needed from day to day.

I'm sitting at the sushi place again in Colón, waiting for a Terell Stafford album to finish downloading. This week the Equinox is docked with us again, a Celebrity line ship. I got a picture of her to show the truly vast number of balcony cabins that she carries, so that will go up later. Hopefully I can get a picture of the oddly shaped stern structure as well, if time permits.
